Is illegal downloading a victimless crime?

Is illegal downloading a victimless crime? It is very hard to answer the question. However, I would say that illegal downloading is not a victimless crime because without the owner’s consent, such as downloading music, movies, or books, is stealing legally protected intellectual property. This results show that owners do not get proper compensation for the work they did. I strongly agree that we need to protect owner’s properties.

As I said earlier, illegal downloading is same as stealing. Many people may think that the download happens very quickly and with ease does not mean there is not a victim. When people obligate illegal downloads, it means that academic property has been stolen without the owner’s permission. For example, when someone or your friends use or steal without your permission, you may get mad or upset. It is same reason that we should download illegally.

Computer Science Major

My major is computer science. Computer science majors learn about computer systems and the way humans and computers interact from a scientific perspective. Instruction includes programming and the theory and design of software.  The reason why I chose my major as computer science is that include mathematics, technology, and high payment.  Also, as many people know, STEM fields are highly specialized because the skills and knowledge base needed to succeed.

As many people know, computer science has become an essential part of the socio-economic development of country. The role of computer in computer science department cannot be described as a word because it is very important. We develop programs, systems, and technologies in different ways day by day.

Aaron Swartz

According to the biography, Aaron Swartz was an American computer programmer, writer, political organizer, and internet activist. Also, he was the founder of Demand Progress, which supported the campaign that against the Internet Censorship bills. Even though he was involved with other social issues, he worked on the Stop Online Piracy Act, known as SOPA.

There are so many gossips that talk about why Aaron died. However, based on his family’s interview, Aaron killed himself because he was depressed. At the time of his death, Swartz was facing a potential conviction of 35 years and up to $1 million in fines for allegedly downloading thousands of scholarly articles from the online database JSTOR with a hidden computer connected to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s network (Mashable Social Media, 2013).

I am not sure what people think or say about some U.S. laws. However, I think it is too much that he had a potential conviction of 35 years and up to $1 million in fines for allegedly downloading thousands of scholarly articles. In my opinion, the government needed to give him a chance or give him a warning for the first time. He was not a criminal, and he pot his efforts on working on the Stop Online Piracy Act. I wish the government would go over these kinds of laws and fix it.

STEM

According to the dictionary, STEM education is an acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Longman Dictionary, 2011). In my opinion, STEM jobs pay well compared to other jobs. According the article, it says that STEM fields are highly specialized because the skills and knowledge base needed to succeed within STEM is high, which works to drive the pay up (Forbes, 2013). Since STEM Fields are popular to college students, there are so many students who are trying to get in STEM education. However, as many people know that STEM jobs are not for everyone, which means students need to choose major which in a field they are both passionate about, as well as they are interested at.

MOOCs

I am pretty sure that many college students have had some experience with one online alternative (Code Academy). A MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) is the online courses that are taught by top professors at some of the world’s best-known universities. There are some ways that can MOOCs change higher education, such as a cheap, high-quality alternative to expensive and exclusive universities.

I believe that online education can replace college. According to the article, it says that a MOOC is a lot like a college class, and there’s a MOOC in just about every subject. If students want to work and do have financial problems, I would recommend these programs because they can save time and money at the same time.

Syria war against US

I am pretty sure many people think that WAR is bad, and we need to define who made wrong decisions. As many people know, the relationship between Syria and US is not very good. They first started their war about few years ago and now, they still fight with some issues. The biggest issue is that Syria has chemical weapons that could attack US. According to the article, Syria took the first formal step towards surrendering its chemical weapons on Thursday, sending the United Nations an application to join the international convention prohibiting the production and use of such arms (Times of Oman, 2013).

This is not only problem between Syria and US. When they involve fighting, which means a war, then other countries could involve together, so this will be getting worse day by day. I hope Syria and US find out the solution to keep peace.

Government Shutdown 2013

“Government Shutdown” is the hottest topic right now. This shutdown is the first since late 1995, and the Federal Government failed to break a bitter budget standoff over President Obama’s health care law. First, I want to explain about what “Shutdown” means. According to the online article, hundreds of thousands of US public servants will be put on unpaid leave, which estimated 800,000 civilian workers out of 2.1 million will be affected. In addition, more than 400 national parks and monuments will close to tourists. NASA will also put more than 85% of its employees on unpaid leave.

Computer Science

My major is computer science. Computer science is the study of the principles and use of computer science. The reason why I choose computer science as my major is that computer science is very broad field. According to the New York Time, many students want to have computer science major because the expansion and advancement of networking and information technology are the most important drivers of economic competitiveness and other industries. Also, the most interesting things about this article was that without growth of computer science department, energy, health care, education, and national security or other crucial areas will be not achievable.

I am pretty sure most of university majors and studies are hard and challenge. In my opinion, computer science is one of the hardest majors because it asks you to contain mathematic and technical skills. However, according to the article, Dice News, there are five things to remember. For example, people need to know about themselves, which means they need to know whether working as a solo or as a team. Also, they need to select a sustainable career, acquire marketable skills, get hands-on experience, and preserve.

Net Neutrality

Before I talk about net neutrality, I want to state what net neutrality is.

According to the online dictionary, net neutrality is that internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the internet equally, which means no discriminating or charging differentially by user content and site.

I am pretty sure that there are so many people have different opinions about net neutrality. However, in my opinion, net neutrality is a good idea because it regulates fraudulent billing, protect consumer privacy, and promote universal service. In addition, according to the article, SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and its Senate companion bill, the Protect IP Act (PIPA). The purpose of these two bills is to make it harder for sites, especially those who live outside of the United. Because it makes it harder for site, it has strong protection, and many people do hot have to worry about privacy.
